Four scenes, four people: the husband who yearns for a son, ignorant of his own sterility; the wife who commits adultery to fulfill her husband’s wish; the father of the child; and the outsider whose actions will affect them all. In this turn on a medieval morality play, Steinbeck casts an unwavering light on these four intertwined lives, revealing in their finely drawn circumstances the universal contours of vulnerability and passion, desperation and desire.
Director Reid helms a veteran cast consisting of David Sinkus and Gregory Wagrowski, and introducing to the FUSION stage Danyal Budare and Sheridan Johnson.
Steinbeck (1902-1968), one of the pre-eminent American writers of the 20th century, was a winner of the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, and the Nobel Prize for Literature. Known for his depictions of the working class, his writings encompass striking social commentary still relevant today. The novels The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, and Cannery Row are his most popular amongst a large canon of work. Burning Bright (1950), is the third and most complete work he created specifically for the stage.
