High Desert Playback Presents Where We Belong: Stories of Sanctuary + Solidarity
After a successful tour of various downtown ABQ venues in partnership with Downtown ABQ Mainstreet Arts + Culture District—OffCenter Arts, Sanitary Tortilla Factory, and the Orpheum Community Hub at Homewise— High Desert Playback culminates its premiere season with their biggest show yet!
Join them as they honor your stories of sanctuary and solidarity in celebration of Juneteenth and LGBTQ+ Pride Month. And it’s not just a show, it’s a party, featuring the beats of DJ Anjo King!
High Desert Playback makes theater for social change in New Mexico and beyond. Their multi-racial, queer-centered ensemble “plays back” the real-life stories of our audience members, igniting community dialogue, cultural healing, and collective liberation.
Tickets are “Pay What It’s Worth,” which you’ll pay (if you choose to) after the show. The suggested ticket price is $35. They expect the show to sell out so, the only way to guarantee your seat is to reserve it now!
ABOUT HIGH DESERT PLAYBACK
High Desert Playback was founded in 2023 by Lynn Johnson and Allison Kenny. Since 2002, Lynn and Allison have built their lives together as a married couple, co-parents, and business partners dedicated to the arts and social change.
Although they are a new entity, they are not new to this work.
In 2019, they co-founded Oakland Freedom Theater—a playback theater with a similar mission—in their former home of Oakland, CA. Just as they were building momentum, the Covid19 pandemic hit and changed everything, including their home. They moved from Oakland to Albuquerque in November 2020. They decided to continue the work they started here in their new community.
Because of their focus on racial justice, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and other people of color living in NM (and beyond) are and will always be centered in the work. In addition, they work with LGBTQ2S+ folks, artists/activists, and white allies who are committed to racial justice. They work to make all their workshops and events accessible to disabled audience members and performers.
